Hobbies

Occasionally, we all need to inject a bit of interest, fun, and distraction into our lives, away from our phones. But what should we do? We suggest choosing three activities and trying each one, perhaps one per week or at your own pace. You might find one that brings a touch of happiness to your life!

Spend time in nature

Whether it’s walking or learning to keep bees in the garden, nature can have a direct de-stress effect. What do you like to do to connect to nature?

Make a non-digital photo album

Choose your favourite photos and have them printed, then spend time adding them to an old-fashioned photo album. Maybe try some scrapbooking techniques to make it look amazing!

Start learning a language

Language learning is a hobby that can take you so many places. Very rewarding (just ask Dr. Michelle!). Yes, you can try Duolingo, but also look at Lingopie, Coffee Break, local community classes, and iTalki – just to get you started!

aquascaping.jpg
Start an aquarium

A relatively clean and easy pet to maintain, aquariums can be kept simple or you can delve into the world of community tanks, aquascaping, or paludariums! Need some help? Click here for a beginners kit, and a book on how to start.

Have an 'at-home-spa-day'

One of our favourites – think about everything you’d love if you were at a day spa, and recreate that in a single day for yourself. Plan ahead, so you have the food you’d like, bath-bombs, face-masks, massage, movies and blankets.

Volunteer to help

People, pets, plants… there is always a need for an extra pair of hands. If you would love to volunteer helping sick kids, or rescue pets, or a local park, check out what’s available near you.

Organise a games night

Catch up with some of those friends you haven’t seen for a while, with a night of fun! Try Bingo, solve a Murder mystery, or build your own settlement.

Pay it forward

Take yourself, and perhaps a friend, for a relaxing coffee at a cafe that offers ‘pay it forward’. Or try to see how many people in your week you can encourage and compliment. Try a month of noting the best thing about each person you meet.

Learn an instrument

It’s not difficult to find a second-hand instrument these days. Once you have it, you could try joining a community class, using Youtube lessons, or getting a tutor.

Baking-for-beginners.jpg
Bake and decorate

For those of us who are not confident, try building basic baking skills and enjoy sharing your creations with friends. For the more experienced, start advancing your decoration skills and wow your family!

Build-with-wood.jpg
Build or tinker

Nothing quite as ‘mindful’ as building something of your own, or tinkering away to make it exceptional. Time to pick up those tools!

Start-your-own-podcast.jpg
Start your own podcast

What is something you like to think about? Share your thoughts with your own podcast. Why not? It could be fun.

Take a class

Have you always wanted to learn to act, distinguish between wines, draw animals, or communicate with sign-language? What about learning more history, philosophy, or first aid? Classes are found online, or at local community centres, universities and TAFE.
