You may be familiar with being able to cancel or not show up to your doctor's (GP) appointment without a cancellation fee. GPs can accommodate this, as they often overbook so they don’t have gaps in their day and take in last-minute requests. As a result, there is no cancellation fee, but patients usually must wait for (sometimes long) periods after their allocated appointment time before seeing the doctor.

Psychologists do not double-book our clients. Your appointment time is our commitment to you. We prepare for your session in our own time and therefore have already undertaken work on your behalf before your attendance. Late notice cancellations, therefore, waste the time of your psychologist both for the preparation time and the time slot you had booked, as it is almost always impossible to get another client to fill the time at late notice. In addition, cancelling at the last minute means any clients in real need of an appointment miss out, because of the late notice.
